NAIROBI Asics Gel Noosa Tri 9 Baratas , Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's Parliament voted on Thursday to withdraw the East African nation from the International Criminal Court (ICC), where the country's president and his deputy are facing trials for crimes against humanity.
The legislators who had called for a special session to discuss Kenyan cases at The Hague-based court voted in favor of a bill to effect the move which they said will be tabled again in Parliament within 30 days.
The heated debate initiated by the government-led Jubilee coalition sparked a walk-out by members of the opposition, who termed the motive behind the debate as disturbing.
The controversial debate to suspend any links, cooperation and assistance to the ICC comes barely a week before the trial of Deputy President William Ruto and former radio presenter Joshua arap Sang begins at the world court.
Parliamentary Majority Leader Aden Duale told lawmakers that leaving The Hague-based court would redeem the image of Kenya and protect the country's citizens and sovereignty.
""This matter before us today is a matter of great importance and it touches on the sovereignty of this nation,"" Duale told Parliament Asics Gel Nimbus 19 Baratas , adding that the trials will be the first for a sitting president and his deputy to be tried in a foreign land.
According to the Rome Statute, Article 127, 1, a state party may, by written notification addressed to the UN secretary-general Asics Gel Nimbus 17 Baratas , withdraw from this statute.
The withdrawal shall take effect one year after the date of receipt of the notification, unless the notification specifies a later date.
However, in part 2 of the same article, states that a state shall not be discharged, by reason of its withdrawal Asics Gel Mai Baratas , from the obligations arising from this statute while it was a party to the statute, including any financial obligations which may have accrued.
Its withdrawal shall not affect any cooperation with the court in connection with criminal investigations and proceedings in relation to which the withdrawing state had a duty to cooperate and which were commenced prior to the date on which the withdrawal became effective, nor shall it prejudice in any way the continued consideration of any matter which was already under consideration by the court prior to the date on which the withdrawal became effective.
The lawmakers allied to the Jubilee coalition rallied on their majority numbers in Parliament to push through the motion.
The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD), which is led by the former prime minister Raila Odinga, however criticized the move by the government to pull Kenya out of the Rome Statute.
In a statement issued after a joint meeting in Nairobi Asics Gel Lyte V Baratas , CORD said the objective of the ICC is partly to put an end to impunity so that the perpetrators of serious crimes within the jurisdiction of the court, including crimes against humanity, are punished.
It said the membership to the Assembly of State Parties of the ICC is a demonstration of the people's sovereign will, in action, to be part and parcel of the family of nations which since the creation of the UN have reaffirmed their faith in fundamental human rights and in the dignity and worth of the human person. ""The withdrawal from the ICC will be inconsistent with and defeat the purposes and objectives of the Constitution of Kenya Asics Gel Lyte III Baratas ,"" CORD said.
The lawmakers who attended the meeting said for Kenya to remain faithful to the Constitution as enacted and proclaimed on Aug. 27, 2010 it must not contemplate withdrawing from the Rome Statute, adding that Kenya cannot exist outside the realm of international law in all situations.
Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, Ruto and Sang face crimes against humanity charges for their alleged roles in murders, deportation or forcible transfer of population Asics Gel Lique Baratas , and persecution during Kenya's 2007-2008 post-election violence.
Ex-president Mwai Kibaki and his close rival, Odinga, fiercely contested the 2007 presidential elections which resulted in a two- month post-election violence uprooting more than half a million people.
The violence was blamed on the fierce competition for a share of the national wealth between the various tribal groups. Most of it had to do with the distribution of land and access to state power.
The violence was sparked by a dispute in the tally of the presidential votes pitting then Odinga and Kibaki.
The dispute escalated into a near civil war but was mediated by former UN secretary general Kofi Annan, leading to the formation of a coalition government.
The country has in the recent past witnessed counter accusations over the authenticity of some of the anonymous prosecution witnesses used by the ICC during the confirmation of charges hearings against Kenyans accused of bearing the greatest responsibility over the infamous post election violence.
Ruto, who was a member of parliament at the time Asics Gel Kinsei 6 Baratas , will be the first senior Kenyan politician to stand trial for crimes committed during the violence.
The trial of Kenyatta, in a related but separate case, is due to start at the ICC in November. Ruto and Kenyatta, who were on opposite sides of the 2007-2008 political divide, are accused of organizing attacks against each other's supporters. They were elected in March 2013 on a joint ticket.
The three Kenyan suspects are not subject to arrest warrants Asics Gel Kayano Trainer Baratas , having cooperated with the court until now, and have pledged to continue voluntarily appearing before the ICC.
Kenyatta's government has repeatedly tried, since taking office in April, to seek the support of regional leaders and political bodies, including the UN Security Council and the African Union Asics Gel Kayano 23 Baratas , to end the ICC's cases.
