one bit the intensity of the rivalry between the Ravens and Steelers. If it is not the most historic series in NFL history Zay Jones Jerseys Stitched , it’s as intense as any. Just listen to what John Harbaugh told his players this week, heading into their visit to Pittsburgh.“One of the things that was said in the meetings … is that you’re not a Raven until you beat the Steelers,” Harbaugh said. “We have some young guys that still need to beat the Steelers.”To remain on top of the AFC North, that’s exactly what Baltimore (2-2) must do. Cleveland is tied with the Ravens, and the Steelers are 1-3, but come off a convincing intra-division victory against Cincinnati. But even if both squads were 0-4, the passion, the hard hits and the fervor of the crowd would make it a highlight of Week 5.“No matter who is playing,” Ravens left tackle Ronnie Stanley said, “this rivalry is going to be one of the biggest rivalries in all of sports.”While Ravens-Steelers meetings often are decided in the trenches, Pittsburgh’s coaches and players know that stopping fast, versatile and elusive Lamar Jackson is critical to having a chance against Baltimore. So the Steelers brought in a replica of Jackson in Taryn Christion, who ran a similar offense at South Dakota State.“You can’t really replicate (Jackson in practice), but you can get as close as possible,” Steelers defensive back Mike Hilton said. “Having a guy that moves around and is able to keep plays going is going to be big for us. We know we have to have good rush lanes and keep him in the pocket.”Absolutely.Week 5 began Thursday night with the Seattle Seahawks‘ 30-29 home victory over the Los Angeles Rams. Russell Wilson threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Chris Carson on fourth-and-goal with 2:28 remaining to give Seattle the lead, and the Rams’ Greg Zuerlein missed a 44-yard field goal with 11 seconds left. Wilson was 17 of 23 for 268 and four touchdowns for Seattle (4-1). The Rams dropped to 3-2.Off this week are Miami (0-4) and Detroit (2-2).Green Bay (3-1) at Dallas (3-1)Even with both teams losing last week — the Packers‘ defense showed little, and the Cowboys‘ offense showed even less — this is a juicy matchup. It almost always seems to be.The Packers have won seven of the past eight in this series, with Dallas’ victory coming during a franchise-record 11-game winning streak when QB Dak Prescott and RB Ezekiel Elliott were rookies in 2016. And the Packers are 3-0 at AT&T Stadium, including a Super Bowl victory against Pittsburgh.Green Bay could be missing WR Davante Adams, who had a career-high 180 yards receiving against the Eagles but left early with a turf toe injury.Prescott has been perfect in the third quarter this year, completing all 28 passes. He needs one rushing TD to tie Roger Staubach’s club record of 20 by a quarterback.Tampa Bay (2-2) at New Orleans (3-1)The Bucs stunned the Saints in the season opener at the Louisiana Superdome last season. Now, they come off scoring a single-game record 55 points on the road against the defending NFC champion Rams.New Orleans needs that strong pass rush it showed last week in downing Dallas, because Jameis Winston has passed for at least 375 yards and three TDs in two straight outings. In Chris Godwin and Mike Evans, he had dynamic wideouts who each have four TD receptions, tied for first in the NFL.Teddy Bridgewater has won his two starts in place of Drew Brees (thumb surgery), but it’s an aggressive, quick defense that has placed New Orleans atop the NFC South.Cleveland (2-2) at San Francisco (3-0) Monday nightNo team is more of a pleasant surprise than the 49ers. Coming off a bye, they could move ahead of the Rams and Seahawks in the standings by remaining undefeated. But Cleveland has won four of the past five in this series between the NFL’s two worst franchises from 2015-18. The Browns are 11-52-1 in that span; 49ers 17-47.Cleveland’s balanced offense led by running back Nick Chubb and receiver Jarvis Landry was huge in last week’s win at Baltimore. The Browns are tied for first place in the AFC North with the Ravens, the first time since Week 10 in 2014 they were on top of the division.Indianapolis (2-2) at Kansas City (4-0)This is their second meeting of 2019, with the Chiefs‘ win over Indianapolis in January their first home playoff victory since Jan. 8, 1994. The Chiefs seek to start 5-0 for a third consecutive season and are odds-on to get it: KC is 11-2 under coach Andy Reid in October. Reid needs one win to reach 200 regular-season victories. He has 211 total, sixth most in NFL history.Adam Vinatieri needs three field-goal attempts to become the second player in league history with 700. Morten Andersen had 709. The Colts kicker is the oldest player in the league at age 46.Atlanta (1-3) at Houston (2-2)A rare meeting: The series tied 2-2.The Falcons don’t prosper against the AFC. They have lost six straight and 12 of their past 13 to AFC opponents. If they don’t improve their turnover margin (minus-5), they can’t expect to contend.Houston, meanwhile, is a plus-2 and has forced a turnover in 17 consecutive games, the NFL’s longest active streak.A key here will be whether Atlanta’s leaky and banged-up pass defense can slow down Deshaun Jackson’s connections with DeAndre Hopkins.Minnesota (2-2) at New York Giants (2-2)The Giants were buried by so many pundits after their first two losses. Then Daniel Jones moved in at quarterback for Eli Manning and, now, the G-Men could wind up tied for the NFC East lead with a win here and a Dallas loss. But, as New York coach Pat Shurmur notes, the Vikings present quite a challenge for any quarterback.“They have outstanding players everywhere Robert Foster Jersey ,” Shurmur says. “When you start saying, ‘OK, well, this is their best player. No, this guy is their best player.’ All of the guys up front . they have two edge rushers. They have interior guys that can get push. They have linebackers that are Pro Bowlers. They have corners and they have safeties that have all been to Pro Bowls. They’re well-coordinated and they put pressure on the passer, and they do a good job of stopping the run. That’s what you want from a defense.”The Vikings lost five straight outdoor road games, including 16-6 last week at Chicago.Jacksonville (2-2) at Carolina (2-2)Both of these teams were buried after 2-0 starts and injuries to starting QBs Nick Foles and Cam Newton. Guess what! The winner here, whether the Jaguars with rookie Gardner Minshew, or the Panthers with Kyle Allen, also could find itself looking down at the rest of its division.Carolina has the league’s stingiest pass defense, which might not make a lot of difference if Leonard Fournette goes off again. The Jacksonville back had a career-high 225 yards rushing last week and leads the AFC in that department.Coach Ron Rivera (73-58-1) can pass John Fox (73-71) for most regular-season wins in Panthers history. But the Panthers are 0-2 at home.Buffalo (3-1) at Tennessee (2-2)The teams that brought us the Music City Miracle in 2000 — Buffalo folks are still arguing that lateral was a forward pass — meet up in what rarely has been a good series for the Bills. They trail it 28-18, though they have won two straight vs. the Titans by one point each. The Bills can match the franchise’s longest streak to start a season since 1993 with a third road win, but starting QB Josh Allen has been in the NFL’s concussion protocol. Some takeaways would help Buffalo, except Tennessee has committed only one, a league low. The Titans also have found a strong pass rush.Chicago (3-1) vs. Oakland (2-2) at LondonOakland’s early season trek continues with a trip across the Pond. The Raiders will find there one Khalil Mack, the edge rusher they traded to Chicago before last season. All Mack has done is lead the most rugged defense in football.“Vindictiveness. I like that word,” Mack says of his approach to Sunday’s game. “Yeah. Yeah. I mean, that’s the whole point man. You can’t play this game with too much emotion, man. Ultimately, I try to stay focused on the task at hand and understanding the situation and understanding what they’re going to be thinking that I feel. But ultimately, I’m going to go out there and do what I do, and that’s play football and love the game that I play. You know what I mean?”Sure do: Mack has been showing what he can do his entire career.New England (4-0) at Washington (0-4)Every opponent for the Patriots has been winless going into the matchup this season. So why should the Redskins be any different?New England comes off yet another stellar defensive performance to offset an ineffective offense: Tom Brady’s 45.9 passer rating against Buffalo was the sixth lowest of his career and lowest since finishing with a 34 rating in a 27-20 loss to Indianapolis on Nov. 5, 2006. The Patriots had lost the previous six times Brady finished with a passer rating of 48 or lower, but he might rate about 80 points higher in this one.Washington is in such turmoil — an accurate term politically or athletically — that when coach Jay Gruden was asked about a plan for facing the Patriots, he said he didn’t have one yet. Hopefully the team has one by Sunday.Arizona (0-3-1) at Cincinnati (0-4)There are reasons to watch this game. We just can’t think of any at the moment.OK, maybe tune in to see which of the first-year head coaches might get his initial win: Kliff Kingsbury of the Cardinals or Zac Taylor of the Bengals.Or, if you like seeing QBs get knocked down, the Cardinals have given up a league-high 20 sacks, followed by the Bengals with 19.New York Jets (0-3) at Philadelphia (2-2)New York has been hopeful that Sam Darnold will return less than a month after contracting mononucleosis. One must hope coach Adam Gase isn’t thinking about rushing back his franchise quarterback, particularly with this season seemingly a lost cause.Philly comes off a super-impressive win at Green Bay, the first time the Eagles truly looked like a contender. Their defense is short-handed, though, and they need their receiving group to heal up quickly.Denver (0-4) at Los Angeles Chargers (2-2)One disappointing team, and one total flop through 25 percent of the season. The Broncos have perfected losing close games, and struggle moving the ball on the ground and stopping the run. Which means LA, much more proficient through the air, might give lots of work to its deep stable of running backs. The promise of youth, especially with a player whose ceiling is as high as Allen’s, has provided much more optimism than a player who had already reached his ceiling in Tyrod Taylor. Our annual “State of the Bills roster” series continues with a look at the most important position in the game—a position where the Bills hope they have finally found the right person. All statistics and snap counts are courtesy of profootballreference.com, and all contract and financial data comes from Spotrac.
Josh AllenContract status for 2019: Signed; $4,814,326 cap hit ($17,331,577 dead cap hit if cut)Age: Turned 23 on 5/21/192018 playing time: 12 games (11 starts), 719 snaps (67.89% of offensive total)Key 2018 statistics: 169/320 (52.8%), 2,074 yards, 10 TDs, 12 INTs, 89 carries, 631 yards, 8 TDs, 67.9 rating, 52.3 QBR, 28 sacks, 8 fumblesBuffalo pinned its hopes on Allen in April, sending pick 12, pick 53, and pick 56 in the 2018 NFL Draft to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, moving up to select the Wyoming product at number seven overall. General manager Brandon Beane was aggressive in making sure that he drafted “his guy,” and Allen delivered quite a bit of hope in his rookie season. The young quarterback was expected to sit for much of his first year, similar to what the Kansas City Chiefs did with Patrick Mahomes. Of course, the Chiefs had Alex Smith keeping the seat warm, and the Bills had Nathan Peterman, who lasted all of one half as the starting quarterback of the team before Allen took the reins. Looking just as raw as advertised early on, Allen struggled, completing 75-of-139 passes (53.96%) for 832 yards, two touchdowns, and five interceptions over his first six games. Allen had a quarterback rating of 61.8 over that time, and he took 21 sacks. He also ran for 155 yards and three touchdowns on 35 attempts. In his sixth game, he injured his throwing elbow against the Houston Texans. This was a blessing for two reasons—first, the injury wasn’t serious, but secondly, it gave Allen time to sit and watch the game from the sidelines. After he returned from the injury http://www.thebillslockerroom.com/authentic-patrick-dimarco-jersey , he took a clear step forward. While the accuracy was still an issue, as Allen completed 94-of-181 passes (51.93%), he was much better overall. Allen threw eight touchdowns and seven interceptions, and he totaled 1,242 yards in those final six games. His quarterback rating went up, although it was still low (72.6), but he only took seven sacks in those six games. Most impressively, Allen carried the ball 54 times for 476 yards and five touchdowns, establishing himself as the team’s leading rusher on the season.Allen definitely has some warts to his game—he isn’t always accurate, he often tries to make way too much happen, and he does not shy away from contact as a rusher—but his progress throughout the year was incredibly encouraging. Matt BarkleyContract status for 2019: Signed; $1.74 million cap hit in 2019Age: 28 (29 on 9/8/19)2018 playing time: 1 game (1 start), 73 snaps (6.89% of offensive total)Key 2018 statistics: 15/25 (60%), 232 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INT, 117.4 rating, 84.7 QBR, 1 sackAnd the best game by a Buffalo quarterback in 2018 goes to...a player the team had signed eleven days prior to that first and only start. Barkley dismantled the New York Jets on the road—his state line above notes that one fantastic performance. For his troubles, Barkley earned himself a two-year contract extension, which will keep him as Josh Allen’s backup through the 2020 season.Barkley had been released by the Cincinnati Bengals in September with an injury designation, and the Bills essentially plucked him off the couch to replace an injured Allen and Derek Anderson; he was tapped to start over an ineffective Nathan Peterman, and he made the most of his opportunity. Barkley is what you want in a backup—he can come in and perform in a pinch, and he is a team-oriented guy who will gladly help Allen along in his development.Tyree JacksonContract status for 2019: Signed a multi-year UDFA contract; $500k cap hit in 2019Age: 28 (29 on 9/8/19)2018 playing time: 14 games for University at BuffaloKey 2018 statistics: 225/407 (55.3%), 3131 yards, 28 TD, 12 INT, 136.7 rating, 55 rushes, 161 yards (2.9 YPC), 7 rushing TDs for University at BuffaloWhile many expected a team to take a flyer on the athletic quarterback who declared a year early for the NFL Draft, Jackson went undrafted and signed as a priority free agent with the Bills to stay in Buffalo. He is very raw as a prospect, and will likely need some seasoning as a 53-man roster stash who doesn’t see the 46-man game day roster or as a member of the practice squad. He has all the physical tools to be a successful NFL quarterback but can he get the mechanics perfected?
Offseason OutlookThe Bills went into the offseason with Allen, Barkley, and Derek Anderson. When Buffalo signed Jackson, Anderson went back to the family life and retired for a second time. With the wagon clearly hitched to Allen, the depth chart is not going to change unless there is an injury. The biggest question at the position is whether or not Jackson can play his way onto the roster during the preseason.
